Sabotage of anti-Jewish measures by increasing numbers of Hungarians, including highly placed officials, is presenting a serious problem to the pro-Nazi Hungarian government, it is reported here today.
In the Carpathian town of Munkacz, in the section of Czechoslovakia seized by Hungary, the chief of police has been dismissed for releasing fugitive Jews who had been seized in the Carpathian Mountains while attempting to flee the country.
The Hungarian press complains that large-scale aid is being given Jews. Many persons have intervened with the authorities for Jewish friends, including hundreds of Christian lawyers in Budapest who interceded with the Minister of the Interior for Jewish colleagues.
The papers also disclose that two officials of the Budapest municipality were arrested for providing a Jewish textile wholesaler with forged baptismal and marriage certificates and even a false army paybook. They were also accused of assisting other Jews. One of the men jumped to his death from the third floor of a police building in which he was being interrogated.
Another problem facing the Sztejay government is the shortage of skilled workers as a result of the ousting of Jews from all professions and industries. The Budapest Engineers Chamber has protested to the government that ability and experience are being ignored in replacing Jewish workers.
