The Allied Nations were urged to take steps now to proclaim Palestine a Jewish Commonwealth, at a mass-meeting tonight in Carnegie Hall held on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Balfour Declaration.
Speakers at the meeting also urged Congress to pass the Palestine Resolution which demands unrestricted Jewish immigration to Palestine and the establishment of a Jewish Commonwealth. They pointed out that now that the military authorities have withdrawn their opposition to the resolution, there is no reason why the bill should not be acted on at once.
The meeting was arranged by the Zionist Organization of America and presided over by Rabbi Israel Goldstein, president of the organization. Speakers included Senator Robert F. Wagner, Dr. Stephen S. Wise and others. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor, sent a message to the gathering stating that “there is no justification for any further delay in the rendering of a decision on the part of the United Nations. The Balfour Declaration made twenty-seven years ago, favoring the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, must be given immediate force and effect.”
ELEVEN GOVERNORS COMMEMORATE ANNIVERSARY OF BALFOUR DECLARATION
Eleven governors have taken action to commemorate the twenty-seventh anniversary of the issuance of the Balfour Declaration, it was announced today by the American Zionist Emergency Council.
The Council disclosed that five governors have proclaimed November 2nd “Palestine Day” in their states, and six others, including Governor Thomas E. Deway of New York, the Republican candidates for the presidency, have issued statements on the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration, which pledged the reestablishment of the Jewish National Home in Palestine.
Proclamations have been issued by Governor Sam C. Ford of Montana, Governor Matthew M. Neely of West Virginia, Governor Herbert R. O’Conor of Maryland, Governor Henry F. Schricker of Indiana and Governor John C. Vivian of Colorado. Statements on the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration have been issued by Governor Raymond E. Baldwin of Connecticut, Governor Robert O. Blood of New Hampshire, Governor Colgate W. Darden, Jr. of Virginia, Governor Dewey, Governor Walter Edge of New Jersey and Governor Edward Martin of Pennsylvania.
