The American Zionist Emergency Council today made public a protest against the plan to send to a UNRRA camp in North Africa the 1,670 Jews recently rescued from Germany, instead of admitting them to Palestine.
“For the Jews of Europe liberation will not be liberation unless they are entitled to enter the Jewish National Home,” the Council said. It emphasized that it cannot accept the explanation by Lord Cranborne, former Colonial Secretary, given in the House of Lords last week, to the effect that exclusion from Palestine is justified because of the housing shortage in that country. “Admittedly there is a shortage of housing today in Palestine, just as there is everywhere else in the world. But the Jews of Palestine eagerly demand the right to receive their stricken brethren,” the statement declared.
