A Washington official in close touch with Near Eastern affairs told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency today that enlargement of the British military establishment based on Palestine indicates that that country will probably take the place which Egypt has heretofore occupied in Empire defense.
The growing movement for autonomy in Egypt, which is now largely independent of the British – illustrated by Egypt’s refusal to declare war on the Axis until Feb. 26, 1945 – is held partly responsible for this shift.
The effect of the growing importance of Palestine for Empire defense on the status of Palestine is uncertain at the present time. It is known that the British would like the United States to share in the mandate responsibility for Palestine, but not to take part in the actual administration of that territory.
