Palestine Chief Rabbi Discusses Return of Jewish Children with Pope Pius Xii

Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Palestine was received by Pope Pius XII and Italian Prime Minister Alcide de Gasperi in two separate audiences here yesterday.

In a 45-minute audience at the Vatican, Rabbi Herzog discussed world religious problems with the Pope and requested his aid in obtaining custody of Jewish children who are still in Catholic institutions, where they were hidden during the Nazi occupation. The Pope promised to investigate the matter.

Herzog, who is touring Europe to investigate the religious and physical conditions of Jewish survivors, thanked Prime Minister de Gasperi for the humans attitude of the Italian people toward the Jews during the Nazi terror. The Prime Minister expressed sympathy for the aims of the Jews and promised to assist them.

Rabbi Herzog also visited Sir Neel Charles, British Ambassador to Italy. He toured various Jewish institutions including a Jewish school, a training farm, a hospital and a home for the aged. Saturday he conducted services and delivered a sermon on Jewish problems at the Ashkenazi Synagogue.
