Washington (Mar. 27)
President Truman in a letter to Herbert H. Lehman, retiring Director General of UNRRA, expressed gratitude for Mr. Lehman’s execution of this “humane task of world-wide proportions.” He thanked him for laying the foundation for UNRRA, and for giving “without stint” of his time and energy.
“You brought to this task the rich background of your years of selfless service in the fields of philanthropy and of public office as Governor of the State of New York,” the President wrote. “The people of the United Nations, no less than those receiving UNRRA aid,” he concluded, “will be grateful to you for your part in making possible this collaboration in the interests of lasting peace.”
