One Jew was killed and one wounded and five Germans were injured last night as a result of a gun battle between displaced Jews and German police and a subsequent clash between the DP’s and German civilians.

An announcement today by the U.S. Third Army said that the incidents had occurred near the Wolfrathausen camp, about 15 miles from Munich. The trouble began when German police halted a car in which several displaced Jews were traveling and asked to see their passes. As they were checking the papers, the official announcement said, four men “believed to be comrades of the displaced persons,” came out of the woods and surrounded the police, attempting to seize their carbines.

In the battle that resulted one Jew was killed and one wounded. When word of the fracas reached the Wolfrathausen camp, between 50 and 100 Jews are reported to have staged a demonstration in the streets of the city. They clashed with German civilians and allegedly injured five.

American military police and U.S. troops were summoned to the scene and broke up the melee, compelling the Jews to return to the camp area.
