The U.N. Economic and Social Council today approved a new definition of “refugees” who will be eligible for aid by the International Refugee Organization. It defines refugees as “victims of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality or political opinions, previous to the outbreak of the second World War, and those displaced persons who as a result of events subsequent to the second World War are unable or unwilling to avail themselves of the protection of the government of their country.”
