Acceptance of Dr. Julian Morgenstern’s proposal that he retire as president of the Hebrew Union College was announced here today by the board of governors of the institution, America’s oldest Jewish seminary.
Dr. Morgenstern, president since 1921, will retire at the end of the present academic year or whenever his successor shall be appointed to take office, the announcement said. He will continue to serve the College as professor of Bible and will devote much of his time to writing and research.
In accepting his request for retirement, the Board paid him high tribute in a resolution which said in part: “It is under Dr. Julian Morgenstern that the College has made its greatest strides. He made it a world institution and not merely an American rabbinical seminary. While clearly conscious of the aims add ideals of his great and saintly predecessors to develop Reform Judaism so that the highest religious purposes of American Israel may be served, he at the same time realized more keanly than did his predecessors that the Hebrew Union College must reach out to deserve world Jewry as did the great rabbinical academies of the past.”
