More than 1,000 displaced Jews today began a children’s clothing manufacturing project in eight DP camps in the American zone of Germany. The project was made possible by the cooperation of Army officials, UNRRA and the Joint Distribution Committee.
The displaced Jews will manufacture the critically needed items on machinery and tools supplied by UNRRA and the JDC. The materials are being supplied by the Army. UNRRA officials said the only factor limiting the number of workers employed on the project was the shortage of machines and shears.
The UNRRA officials also revealed that a new knitting project was planned to produce gloves, scarves and other items. It is hoped to expand the children’s clothing project later to produce aduit clothing.
