The British Government has made frequent representations to Egypt protesting the continued political activities of the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, Hector McNeil, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, today announced in Commons. However, he refused to make any commitment that the government would bar the former Mufti from Palestine under all circumstances.
He also refused to divulge the government’s plans to head off visaless Jewish emigration from Europe, asserting that to release such information would lessen the effectiveness of the action. An M.P. asked why the government bothered requesting cooperation from such nationals as Italy, while it took few steps to prevent UNRRA officials from encouraging immigration to Palestine. McNeil refused to accept the questioner’s assumption concerning UNRRA personnel and replied with a statement that the government was maintaining close contact with the Italian Government.
