The International Refugee Organization provides only 45 cents towards the dollar-a-day minimum required for the upkeep and maintenance of each of the 18,000 homeless Jewish refugees in Italy, most of whom are still confined to displaced persons camps, Dr. Israel Goldstein, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, who is now visiting Europe, cabled today to national head-quarters of the organization here.
Dr. Goldstein emphasized that unless the Jews of America provide through the United Jewish Appeal the balance required to feed, clothe, shelter and care for the displaced Jews in Italy, “continued suffering and hardships during the coming winter nonths are inevitable.” He reported that the Joint Distribution Committee was working hand in hand with the I.R.O.
