The Jewish community of Istanbul has applied to the government for authorization to hold communal elections, it was announced here today by the Chief Rabbinate.
Members of the present community council have held office since 1931 because government permission, which must be obtained before any election may be held, has never been granted since then. When the application is granted the community council will make arrangements for the election of a general assembly which will choose the members for the new council.
