“arab Government” in Gaza Not Believed to Have Egypt’s Backing

The formation of the so-called “Arab Government” with its seat at Gaza is not considered in authoritative quarters here to have the full backing of Egypt, although the provisional capital of the new “government” is in territory occupied by advance Egyptian units.

The British view is that the carving up of the Arab areas of Palestine must be left to the Arab League. Informed quarters point out that British interests are not affected by the way this is done, as long as “stability of the peace settlement” is not jeopardized.
