Truce breaches by Egyptian and Iraqi troops against Israeli positions in southern and northern Palestine were today witnessed by United Nations truce observation teams which were in the area when the violations occurred, it was announced here today.
An official communique revealed that Egyptian planes today bombed the settlement of Gath, well inside Israeli lines. In the bombing and subsequent strafing a number of civilian settlers were wounded. A truce supervisory team was in the area to investigate the three-day battle for two nearby strategic heights. A second truce team was called to the northern front after the Iraqi opened fire on Jewish positions with machineguns and small arms. The U.N. observers went to the front at Geulium and saw Arab snipers in action.
The body of John Locke Lewis, American engineer killed by the Arabs in a recent ambush of a U.N.-escorted Jewish convoy near Latrun, was placed aboard the Marine Carp for transportation to the United States. Communications Minister David Remez and senior officials of the ministry, for whom Locke was doing a railway survey, attended the simple, solemn ceremony.
