As the military situation rapidly worsened for the Nanking Government, a cable from the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Council to the Israeli Government was made public today. It read:

“In the name of the 10,000 Jews in China, threatened with being out off from Israel and the outside world (by the advance of the Communist armies), we appeal to you for immediate entry permits to Israel and your arrangements for transport. We urgently await your assistance.”

(A cable urging the American Jewish Congress to intervene with the U.S. Government to give the Shanghai Jewish refugees “shelter in any place in the U.S. territory, irrespective of any later decision” in their case, was received today by Dr. Stephen S. Wise from the Refugee Council. All non-Chinese in Shanghai are being removed by their respective governments and the Jewish refugees are the only Europeans left behind, it was pointed out by the Congress in making the message public.)
