Chief U.N. Observer Confers with Jews, Arabs on Negev Demarcation Lines

A United Nations spokesman told a press conference here today that “Gen. William Riley, chief United Nations observer in Palestine, has held explanatory talks with Israeli Army representatives in Tel Aviv and with Egyptian Army commanders in Gaza on the establishment of the provisional demarcation lines in the Negev.”

Gen. Riley returned to Haifa and expressed satisfaction with the views of both parties regarding the implementation of the U.N.’s orders, the spokesman said. Gen. Riley declared that in the light of the preliminary consultations, he was hopeful of final success. The conference with Colonel Yigal Yadin, Israeli Chief of Operations, and Reuven Shiloah, Israeli Foreign Ministry official, in Tel Aviv, and the meeting with Major General Saddik Bey, Egyptian commander in the Negev, in Gaza, lasted two hours each, it was revealed.
