World Ort Congress Hears Reports on Dp Situation; Two Delegates Held in Saudi Arabia

The World ORT Union Congress which is being held here, attended by more than 11.0 delegates from 23 countries, today received information that the delegates who were due to arrive in Paris from South Africa had been detained in Saudi Arabia after the plane on which they were flying made a forced landing there. Those held are Rabbi M.C. Wailer and Dr. A. Sonnabend.

Addressing the congress last night, Senator Justin Godart, president of the ORT parliamentary committee in France, stressed the great task which will face the ORT when the International Refugee Organization liquidates its activities within the next 12 months. Harry Greenstein, adviser on Jewish Affaire to the American Military Government in Germany, told the delegates that by September 8 all displaced Jews in Germany will be removed from the DP camps, with the exception of those classified as “hard acre” cases or DP’s wishing to go to the United States.

The congress today heard reports from various countries. Among the speakers-who addressed the gathering yesterday were Chief Rabbi I. Schwartz of France, Dr. Joseph Schwartz, European director of the Joint Distribution Committee, Israeli Consul-General A. Gilboa and representatives of the UNESCO and the International Refugee Organization. The congress, which was opened by Judge Leon Meiss of France, is expected to last four days.
