The United Jewish Appeal reported today that the Jewish Agency addressed an appeal to John J.N. Cloy, U.S. Military Governor in Germany and High Commissioner-designate for the occupied Reich, urging him to aid in speeding the closing of the Jewish DP camps in Germany and to safeguard the restitution rights of Nazi victims.
The deadline set for the liquidation of all Jewish DP camps in the American zone of Germany is Sept. 8, 1949. There are still about 20,000 displaced Jews in the camps in the U.S. zone, most of whom are destined for Israel or the United States, in addition to a “hard core” of 4,500 ill, aged and otherwise incapacitated persons and their families for whom definite emigration arrangements have not yet been made. There are another 15,000 Jewish DP’s living outside of camps who also await emigration.
