The Senate voted last night by 36-30 to recommit the House-approved bill liberalizing the Displaced Parsons Act of 1948 to the Judiciary Committee with instructions that it report back a bill on the subject by Jen. 25–when the 1950 session of Congress convenes.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Emanuel Celler, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, would have added 134,000 European displaced persons to the 204,000 eligible for admission to the U.S. under the present law. The measure would also have eliminated restrictions based on the refugees’ point of origin and work background.
