Husseyin Djahid Yaltchin, the Turkish member of the U.N. Palestine Conciliation Commission, today told representatives of the press here that he considers the United Nations decision to place Jerusalem under international trusteeship “wrong and inapplicable.”
The Turkish diplomat said that the U.N. will have to modify its decision on Jerusalem in the very near future. Recent events have already proven that the decision could not be carried out, he added.
The opinion of Mr. Yaltchin with regard to the Jerusalem issue is generally shared by political circles here as well as by the press. Articles appearing in Turkish newspapers emphasize that internationalization of Jerusalem against the will of Israel and Transjordan can never materialize. Most papers favor an agreement on Jerusalem’s status between Israel and Transjordan, with an international administration to safeguard the Holy Places.
