Some 8,000 persons last night attended the second mass meeting held at Madison Square Garden in the past week to celebrate the second anniversary of Israel’s independence. The meeting was sponsored by the Israel Anniversary Committee in cooperation with the Palestine Pioneers Foundation, League for National Labor in Israel, Tel Hai Fund, American Committee for National Child Centers in Israel, Brith Trumpeldor of America and United Zionists-Revisionists.

Vice-President Alben W. Barkley, featured speaker, hailed the economic advances of the Jewish states during the past two years. Asserting that the existence of the free state of Israel is necessary not only for the maintenance of peace in the Middle East but in the whole world, the Vice-President said it was the duty of all nations and peoples to support the Jewish state.

Sen. Irving M. Ives of New York scored the British Government for arming the Arab states. If England does not change her policy, he said, the U.S. must help Israel defend itself.
