Israel’s Position on International Scene Improved in Last Six Montes, Eban Says

SIGN UP FOR THE JTA DAILY BRIEFING

Israel’s position on the international scene and at the United Nations has improved during the past six months, Aubrey S. Eban, Israel Ambassador to Washington and chief Israel delegate to the U.N., declared at a press conference here this week-end. Mr. Eban will leave for a visit to Israel this week.

He added that as a result Israel is coming into the General Assembly debate on the Jerusalem situation in a much stronger position than last year. At the end of 1949, he pointed out, the Jewish state was under pressure from all sides on the Jerusalem issue. However, he added, many nations which previously favored internationationalization of the city have now come to realize that Israel’s attitude–as expressed in its latest memorandum to the U.N. Trusteeship Council–is very fair and constitutes the most practical solution of the Jerusalem question.
