The Wurttemberg-Baden parliament’s finance committee today approved a motion to contribute 300,000 marks to help in the restoration of the synagogue here destroyed by the Nazis.
Meanwhile, the Jewish community here has opened a temporary house of worship and has invited Rabbi A. Neufeld, formerly of Stuttgart who is now living in Israel, to return here to act as spiritual leader for a two-year period.
The Star of David which a smith in Essen had made for a memorial to Jewish victims of Nazism to be erected near Essen’s main synagogue, and which was removed from the memorial on June 29, was returned today by mail to the smith. The package also contained a 20-mark note and a letter telling the smith to put the emblem back. Police investigation determined that the sender’s return address is false. A reward of 1,000 marks has been posted by the police for information leading to the arrest of the desecrators.
