Tel Aviv Merchants Strike Against Rationing of Clothing and Shoe; Keep Stores Closed

All of Tel Aviv’s clothing and shoe stores shut down today in protest against the new clothing and shoe rationing law announced yesterday by Minister of Supply Dov Josept. The shopkeepers maintained that the rationing law had been imposed suddenly and was not only ineffecient but detrimental to individual business turnover.

Business here has generally remained paralysed since yesterday’s announcement. Dr. Joseph’s announcement approximately came as a surprise to wholesalers not retailers allies. The businessmen seem to be determined to fight the rationing law bitterly.

All shop window in Tel Aviv carried large notices today singed by the Tel Aviv Merchants Association announcing that the clothing and shoe stores will remain shut down until a fair arrangement is concluded with the Israel Supply Ministry. “If the rationing law is not modified, the merchants will not be able to conduct even a minimum scale business,” the association stated.

The affected shopkeepers said that if they are compelled to conduct a prolonged strike, they feel certain “all other business men will join them,” Merchandise, discussions were started between Minister Joseph and representatives of the Merchants Association on the situation. The possibility was not claimed that the issue will be raised in parliament.
