American Federation of Central Europe Jews Protests New U.S. Policy in Germany

The American Federation of Jews from Central Europe today telegraphed Secretary of State Dean Acheson that it is “deeply concerned” over reports that the “Allies intend to withdraw from the field of German legislation in restitution matters.” The message urged “in behalf of many thousands of claimants under existing restitution laws, that control with regard to restitution be retained by the occupation powers.”

The wire, which was also sent to U.S. High Commissioner for Germany John J. McCloy, stressed that otherwise the rights of the claimants “will be impaired under German jurisdiction.” The message said its “plea refers to restitution legislation as well as to implementation of the existing laws, and particularly to continuation of the Court of Restitution Appeals.”
