Henry Morgenthau Jr., general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, who left by air today for New York via Paris, said before his plane look off that the resignation of the Israel Cabinet will not affect the projected $1,000,000,000 Israel bond campaign in the U.S.
Last night Mr. Morgenthau, at a reception tendered in his honor by the Jewish Agency here, said that his “mission had been most successful.” The U.J.A. leader added: “I am returning home, convinced that the present economic problems in Israel can be solved. Progress in constructive efforts has been so remarkable that the road is now open to large-scale industrial and agricultural expansion, if American funds are brought to Israel not only in terms of philanthropy but also through loans and investments.”
Mr. Morgenthau said that Israel was keenly interested in the forthcoming National Planning Conference for Israel and Jewish Rehabilitation, scheduled to be held in Washington October 27-29, to consider programs designed to resolve the present economic difficulties of the Jewish state.
“From what I have seen of the development of industry and the growth of agriculture,” he asserted, “I came to the conclusion that the process of absorption can keep up with the rate of immigration through increased support of the U.J.A. Israel is more than a good business rish–it represents a new force for peace and democracy which deserves the fullest American moral and material support.”
