A 23-year-old Japanese youth, Shigeru Nishiyama, has become so well known in Japan as a Zionist and student of Zionism and Israel that he was invited by the University of Tokyo to lecture on Zionism and Israel.
The youth, who first became interested in the subject of Zionism at the age of 19 as the result of correspondence with an American Jewish friend of his family, has embraced Judaism as his religion. He has also joined the 20-year-old Japanese-Israel Cultural Association. Shigeru, who is a graduate student and is working on his Master of Arts degree–on the subject of Israel–hopes one day to become Japan’s first consul in Tel Aviv.
