American Judaism stands on the threshold of a great new era, Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, declared last night at the annual dinner of the New York Federation of Reform Synagogues at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.
Hailing the third anniversary of the founding of Israel, Dr. Bernstein told the 400 religious and lay leaders of the 59 Liberal Jewish congregations affiliated with the New York Federation, “this epochal achievement could not have taken place without the profound inner faith which has characterized the Jewish people for 4,000 years.” The founding of Israel, Dr. Bernstein said, makes possible the co-existence of two great Jewish communities, one in Israel and the other in America. We are on the threshold of a great new era in American Jewish life, an era in which religion will be the center of Jewish communal life,” he emphasized.
