A luncheon in honor of Israel’s Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett was tendered at the Carlton Hotel here on Friday by Assistant Secretary of State George C. McGhee. Mr. McGhee spoke at the luncheon informally, welcoming the Israel Minister to Washington. Mr. Sharett thanked him for the help extended to the Jewish state by the U.S. Government. High officials of the State Department were among those attending the luncheon.
The House during the week-end passed and sent to the Senate the $7,482,527,790 Mutual Security Appropriation Bill which includes an allocation of $64,950,000 for Israel. Provision was also made in the bill for military aid in which Israel will share.
Chairman Harold D. Cooley of the House Agriculture Committee protested against Israel receiving $50,000,000 of the $64,950,000 on the ground that the proposed use of this amount to settle refugees in Israel had allegedly not been properly explained. Rep, Cooley claimed that Jewish refugees entering Israel would receive “$14,000 percent family. “His arguments were disputed by Rep. Christian Herter and others who called his attention to the actual provisions of the legislation.
The sum of $64,956,000 was appropriated for the Arab states. It included $50,000,000 to care for Arab refugees.
