Israel’s Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett declared tonight that the “primary responsibility” for assisting the people of Israel in the “salvation and rehabilitation” of masses of homeless and oppressed refugees rests upon the Jewish community of the United States and the United Jewish Appeal, although intergovernmental and other forms of aid have important roles in Israel’s economic development.
Mr. Sharett spoke at a United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York campaign dinner held at the Hotel Pierre under the sponsorship of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, one of the agencies participating in the New York U.J.A. drive. “The root of all forms of assistance which Israel is now seeking in the United States–whether governmental grants or loans or the U.J.A. or the Bond issue or private investment–must be faith in Israel’s future,” Mr. Sharett stated.
More than $1,125,000 in contributions to the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York’s 1952 campaign were announced at the dinner which was attended by 300 guests. In addition to Mr. Sharett, speakers included Edward M.M. Warburg, general chairman of the nationwide United Jewish Appeal and a member of the Board of Governors of the Hebrew University; Jack D. Weiler, a New York U.J.A. general chairman; and Dr. Meier Yoeli, a member of the Hebrew University’s faculty now engaged in a research project at the Department of Preventive Medicine in Bellevue Hospital.
Joseph H. Mazer, an associate chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York and a member of the national executive committee of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, presided.
