Israel Ambassador Abba Eban met with Secretary of State Dean Acheson today for a discussion of the shipment of arms from the West to Arab states and, following the meeting, told newsmen that he was “certain that our anxiety is being very sympathetically considered.”
Mr. Eban stated that the expression of concern which he made today to Secretary Acheson was similar to Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett’s previous statement on the same-subject. Mr. Eban said that he had expressed hope that those in charge of the Western policy should take into account the fact that Arab states claim a state of war with Israel, refuse to negotiate peace, and maintain a blockade against Israel.
Sec. Acheson was told that the Arabs’ continued belligerent attitude should be a limiting factor with regard to the supply of arms to those countries. Mr. Eban insisted that the British policy of selling jet planes to Arab states was “unfortunate.”
