Jews in the Soviet zone of Germany were warned today that they will be punished if they ally themselves with “American warmongers.” The warning was made in the “National Zeitung,” Communist organ in Eastern Germany, which is noted for its appeals to Nazis to join with Moscow. The new warning is taken as an indication that more arrests of Jews are to be expected in the Soviet zone.
Official West German sources today estimated that about 400 Jews have escaped from the Soviet part of Germany during the last three weeks. Some of these Jews reported that they fled after they were cross-examined by the Communist Security Police as to whether they had any connections with Israel or with the Joint Distribution Committee.
The expulsion of Jewish leaders from the League of Victims of Nazi Persecution in East Berlin on the charge that they are “Zionist agents,” was announced last night in a statement issued by the Communist-controlled league. Among those expelled were: Julius Meyer, president of the Berlin Jewish Community; Helmuth Looser, president of the Jewish Community of Leipzig; Leo Loewenkopf, president of the Jewish Community in Dresden and Guenther Singer, president of the Jewish Community in Erfurt. All four escaped from the Soviet zone into West Berlin last week.
