Kfar Zekenim, a village for the aged, was opened officially at Shaare Menashe, north of Hadera, yesterday by Malben, the Joint Distribution Committee’s program for assisting aged and handicapped immigrants in Israel.
Some 800 persons, all over the age of 60, are already in the village and the population is expected to reach 1,200 shortly. A new 380-bed hospital is a feature of the new village. A crew of 150 employees cares for the inhabitants, providing all the heavy labor and skilled services. Some of the inhabitants, who are able and willing, earn pocket money by performing light tasks.
At the ceremonies, where the Malben and JDC were praised by Jewish Agency and Israel Government representatives, Dr. George Josephthal of the Agency executive said that seven percent of all immigrants arriving in Israel are over 60.
A new Hapoel Hamizrachi settlement, Messilot, was opened today in the Negev. The Mizrachi Laborites plan to establish 22 smallholders’ settlements in the coming year.
