Clarification of the “underlying intent” of Secretary of State John Foster Dallas’ speech last week on his trip to the Middle East–in which he touched on the Arab-Israel conflict–was given by the State Department yesterday to Israel Ambassador Abba Eban.
The Israel Ambassador, who called on Assistant Secretary of State Henry A. By reader to officially convey for the first time the views of the Israel Government on Mr. Dallas’ speech, later told newspapermen that these views concerned practically every point made by Secretary Dallas on Israel-Arab relations.
Ambassador Eban declared that he could not say whether a statement was pending from the Israel Government but at least, he stated, it will have full knowledge of the underlying intent of Sec. Dallas’ speech. The meeting yesterday was one of a series of talks Mr. Eban is having with high State Department officials. Last Friday he met with Under Secretary of State Walter Bedell Smith and on the same day held a separate meeting with Monnet Davis, American Ambassador to Israel, who is in Washington at present.
Egyptian Ambassador Ahmed Hussein said today, after talking with Secretary Byroade on Secretary of State Dulles’ radio speech, that Mr. Byroade had “a good appreciation and understanding of our point of view” and a helpful attitude toward the Egyptian situation.
