Greeting on the New Year were issued today by President Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, President of the State of Israel, to all the inhabitants of Israel “irrespective of creed and community,” and “unto all our brethren of the House of Israel, wherever they may be.”
Voicing hope that the New Year will be “a year of blessing and success for all,” President Ben-Zvi said:
“We enjoy the privilege denied to our forefathers throughout many generations, to live and see Israel’s statehood reborn. We have lived to be recorded once again in the scroll of life as a nation amongst the nations of the world. We have lived to witness the rebirth of our language. Our flag flies high amidst the flags of other nations, despite the opposition of our enemies who still attempt to deny us our sacred right to live in freedom and independence like all other peoples of the world. Our foes still strive to undermine our very existence and to wipe us off the face of the earth. However, their schemes will succeed no more than did those in the past, and Israel arisen anew shall live and not perish.”
Joseph Sprinzak, Speaker of the Israel Parliament, in a message of “heartfelt greetings to our brethren, wherever they may be,” expressed the wish that they would have “security and honor and increase their participation in the upbuilding of the State and raise a generation faithful to its nation and full redemption.”
He greeted “all peace-loving countries” and voiced the hope that the New Year would be a “year of faith and good will and worldwide peace.”
Abba S. Eban, Israel Ambassador to the United States, in a message to the Jews of America, said that the traditional friendship between the United States and Israel in the past year “has remained firm and I am sure it will remain so in the coming year.” The Jews of Israel, he said, “are fortified by the knowledge that we are not standing alone. The Jewish communities throughout the free world and you, above all, have stood by us. It is you who have made the successful continuance of our work possible. You have stood with us, fully appreciating the glory of the partnership, in the building anew of our ancient land.”
