Le Monde, France’s leading newspaper, which often reflects the views of the French Government, today published a strongly pro-Israel editorial, asserting that the stepped-up campaign of Arab attacks along Israel’s borders are a direct result of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles’ visit to the Middle East.
Le Monde declared that on this tour the Secretary realized that Israel was friendlier to the Western Powers than the Arab states and decided that the United States could afford to alienate Israel in an effort to attract Arab friendship. This policy encouraged the Arabs to stir up new border troubles, the newspaper insisted.
It said both sides were guilty of border violations, but pointed out that a large number of Israelis have been killed in recent Arab attacks. Finally, Le Monde stressed that Israel is attempting to draw the attention of the Western world to the gravity of the situation and to constrain the U. S. and get it to change its policy of wooing the Arabs before a new explosion occurs in the Near East.
