The German Supreme Court here has ordered a further hearing on the appeal filed by Bavaria’s former Chief Rabbi, Dr. Aron Ohrenstein, against his conviction in the 1952 Munich trial that was primarily directed against the late Dr. Philip Auerbach. Dr. Auerbach, Bavarian restitution chief, committed suicide the day after three Nazi judges making up the court found him guilty.
Dr. Ohrenstein, who was given one year in jail, filed a petition for review which has sufficient merit to warrant a full-dress hearing by the Supreme Court, says the ruling handed down this week. While awaiting the re-trial of his case. Dr. Ohrenstein lives in involuntary semi-retirement at his residence on a lakeside south of Munich. He is on leave from his rabbinical post.
