Jewish Welfare Board Starts Four-day Convention Today

The four-day biennial convention of the National Jewish Welfare Board opens here tomorrow to discuss the need for religious and welfare services to Jewish military personnel. General Matthew B. Ridgway, Chief of Staff, United States Army, will be one of the principal speakers at the parley.

The convention will also feature the climax of the Centennial Celebration of the Jewish Community Center and YMHA as an American institution. “Centennial Inventory” will be the theme of tomorrow’s program. Dr. Salo W. Baron, professor of Jewish history, Columbia University, and president of the American Jewish Historical Society, will speak on “1854-1954: A Century of Jewish Life in America.”

The National Jewish Welfare Board’s annual Frank L. Weil Awards for 1954 were won by Dr, Salo W. Baron, New York; Joseph Goldstein, Rochester, N. Y., and Col. Jesse C. Colman, San Francisco, for distinguished contributions in JWB’s three areas of service to the American Jewish community. The award winners will receive bronze medallions and scrolls Saturday night at a dinner session of JWB’s convention.

Dr. Baron, professor of Jewish history at Columbia University, won the award “for distinguished contribution to the development of American Jewish culture” in recognition of his work as teacher, historian and author. Mr. Goldstein, lawyer and communal leader, was voted the award “for distinguished contribution to the advancement of the Jewish Community Center movement. ” Colonel Colman, former member of the San Francisco board of supervisors, will get the award “for distinguished contribution to the welfare of Jewish personnel in the U.S. Armed Forces. “
