A resolution calling upon the United States Government “to return to its one-time friendly and constructive policy toward Israel” was adopted here at the closing session yesterday of the national convention of the Workmen’s Circle, a major Jewish fraternal organization.
The 500 delegates attending the convention pledged themselves to continue their work for the support of Israel and “to maintain fraternal bonds with Israel’s labor movement,” At the same time, the delegates expressed regret over the fact that “the Government of Israel continues to look upon the Yiddish language as an unwanted stranger.”
Ezekiel Eberil, outgoing president of the organization, reported that the Workmen’s Circle had purchased $2, 300, 000 worth of Israel bonds. Nathan Chanin, general secretary, reported that the assets of the organization total $11, 000, 000 and that the Workmen’s Circle maintains branches in 238 cities. It also maintains 142 schools where Yiddish is taught.
The convention adopted a resolution condemning the tactics of Sen. Joseph McCarthy. Another resolution called upon the Eisenhower Administration to combat Communism effectively while, at the same time renouncing Sen. McCarthy’s tactics. Jacob T. Zukerman of New York was elected president of the organization at the concluding session of the convention.
