The Amsterdam city council decided today to purchase the ruins of the so-called “New Synagogue, “which stands in the heart of the former ghetto area, from the Ashkenazi Jewish community and to erect on the site a museum to serve as a reminder of the once thriving Amsterdam Jewish Community which was destroyed by the Nazis. The ancient synagogue, together with the entire Jewish neighborhood, was razed by the Germans during the occupation.
