Six national church and synagogue organizations were honored here today for their contributions “to the advancement of human liberties” in this country and abroad at a special Tercentenary Convocation of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.
Also honored at the convocation was Congregation Shearith Israel, descendant synagogue of the congregation founded by the 23 Jews who landed in New Amsterdam in 1654 to found what later became the American Jewish community. The citation was presented to Dr. David de Sola Pool, rabbi, and Edgar J. Nathan, president, of the congregation. Dr. Ben Zion Dinur, Israel Minister of Education, was presented with a doctorate in Hebrew Letters for both his scholarship and service to the State of Israel.
The national church and synagogue organizations which were honored were: National Catholic Welfare Conference; National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.: Synagogue Council of America; Union of American Hebrew Congregations; United Synagogue of America; and, National Women’s League of the United Synagogue.
