A total of 61 New York senior and junior high schools now offer courses in the Hebrew language, Judah Laps on, director of the Hebrew Culture Council of the Jewish Education Committee, revealed here today.
Mr. Lapson said that this figure is unprecedented in the school systems of this country and noted that these gains were made in a period when the study of all foreign languages on the secondary school and college level was declining. Hebrew courses are offered in 28 junior high schools and 33 senior high schools here.
The success of Hebrew courses in New York has had a salutary effect on the introduction of such courses elsewhere. Twelve high schools in other cities now offer such courses. In Chicago, where one course was offered last year, five are now given. Other cities offering Hebrew include Boston, St. Louis and Los Angeles.
