The Austrian Government decided to resume talks with Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the Committee for Jewish Claims on Austria, it was learned here today. The discussions will be resumed shortly, was indicated.
These indications are contained in a letter received here today by S. Levenberg, Jewish Agency representative in England, from the Austrian Vice Chancellor, Dr. Adolf Schaerf, who is also chairman of the Social Democratic Party in Austria. Mr. Levenberg represented the Israel Labor Party at a meeting of the Bureau of the Socialist International which concluded in London tonight.
The Committee on Jewish Claims has asked Austria to pass legislation which would provide minimum compensation to Nazi victims in Austria of all faiths as well as to the many thousands of Austrian Nazi victims now living abroad, regardless of their present nationality. The Committee has also asked for a just settlement for the vast amounts of personal and business property belonging to 60,000 Austrian Jews who perished under Nazism, many of whom left no heirs or claimants. Most of this property has disappeared into the Austrian economy.
A third request was for measures to aid the small remnant of Jews in Austria through funds to help them rebuild their synagogues and housing assistance to those who last their homes during the Nazi regime.
