Solomon Libin, pioneer Yiddish playwright and short story writer in the United States, died here today at the age of 83.
Mr. Libin, born in Gorki, Russia, came to this country as a youth. He wrote short stories for the Arbeiter Zeitung and Abendblatt and in 1897 became a member of the staff of the Jewish Daily Forward, where he remained until his retirement three years ago. He wrote thousands of short stories, and some 50 plays. His most successful play, “Broken Hearts,” was written in 1903. It had lengthy runs here and in London and was later adapted for a film starring Maurice Schwartz.
