The creation of a central reference library for the use of Jewish educational institutions throughout Europe was announced here today by Stanley Abramovitch, Joint Distribution Committee education consultant, at the current JDC sponsored conference of Jewish educators from 13 countries in Western Europe.
The library, which will be housed in Paris, will contain texts, audio-visual aids material and film strips. The 100 educators at the parley each received three manuals listing the reference material available for use by Jewish schools. The manuals have already been issued in Hebrew, Yiddish and English and will be published in French later.
The library will be for reference purposes only, but the JDC is also arranging a central facility for purchasing books and other teaching materials for the schools. A survey of eight European countries revealed a great paucity of teaching materials. The library’s facilities are designed specifically for all-day schools in whish some six percent of all Jewish children of school age in these countries are enrolled. This compares very favorably with the percentages of children in all-day Jewish schools in the United States and England, Mr. Abramovitch said.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
