The Board of Deputies of British Jews called on the British Government to use its good offices at the United Nations, in cooperation with other freedom-losing nations, to secure Israel against attack from hostile neighbors and to guarantee the Jewish State freedom of passage through the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Akaba.
In unanimously adopted resolutions, the Board declared that the General Assembly resolutions calling on all parties to desist from raiding neighboring territory could be effectively implemented only if Israel’s withdrawal from Egypt is phased and is conditioned upon effective guarantee. It was further urged that Gaza and the islands in the Strait of Tiran not be returned to Egypt or any other Arab country to be used as a base for attacks on Israel.
