A measure which will enable residents of California to make monetary bequests to the State of Israel was enacted into law here when Gov. Goodwin J. Knight signed a bill previously adopted by the State Legislature.
The measure had been introduced by State Senator Richard Richards of Los Angeles, at the request of members of the Jewish community. Under previously existing legislation, it was not legally possible for California residents to make bequests to a foreign power. The new law does not mention Israel specifically, but permits testamentary bequests to any state with which the United States has reciprocal arrangements. It will enter into effect on September 11.
