Associate Justice Joseph Weintraub will be sworn in this week as Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court following action by the State Senate yesterday in unanimously confirming his nomination by Governor Robert B. Meyner. Justice Weintraub, who is the only Jewish member of the seven-man court, will serve for a term of seven years.
The new Chief Justice, who is 49 years old, has long been considered one of New Jersey’s outstanding attorneys. He was admitted to the bar in 1931 after having worked his way through college and law school. He was designated by Gov. Meyner as his personal counsel in 1954 and later that year was appointed New Jersey member of the Bi-State Waterfront Committee. He was appointed to the State Superior Court bench in March, 1956 and elevated to the Supreme Court eight months later. He succeeds the late Chief Justice Arthur T. Vanderbilt who had presided over the court from 1947 until his death last June.
