The United States should make clear to the Soviet Union that it looks on Turkey and Israel “as key points in the balance of the world, ” former Vice President Henry A. Wallace declared here tonight at the 71st annual convention of B’rith Abraham. More than 1, 500 delegates from 300 lodges of the national fraternal group witnessed the presentation to Mr. Wallace of the order’s annual “World Peace Award.”
Mr. Wallace’s statement that Israel and Turkey represented for the United States a fulcrum on which world power was balanced came after he called on the United States to fight the USSR if the latter attempted to move into Turkey. “It is not the way to peace to let Russia take over the Middle East, ” he insisted.
Speaking of Israel’s de cade of achievement, Mr. Wallace said the Jewish State was the “most exciting undertaking in the world — for it is a spirit that comes down from olden times, but it is at the same time forward looking. ” The merging in Israel of peoples of many backgrounds, the onetime Vice President said, “is the most striking demonstrating of the compelling power of an idea that the world has seen. Here a new race and a new spirit is being formed.”
